Lead
Free and ROHS Conversion
In January of 2002, the European Parliament and the
Council of the European Union released two Directives
addressing the reduction of hazardous substances in
Electronic and Electrical Equipment. These two Directives
are RoHS, 2002/95/EC (Restrictions of Hazardous Substances)
and WEEE, 2002/96/EC (Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment). RoHS addresses the design and development
and the reduction of hazardous substances used, while
WEEE addresses the recovery and disposal of electronic
equipment.
The
deadline for compliance with these directives was July,
2006.
TeligentEMS
has taken a leadership role in responding to these directives
and offers a variety of services to assist OEM’s
who provide products to the European market. These services
encompass all aspects of RoHS issues including:
- Supply
Chain Management
-
Process Controls
-
Engineering Assistance
Supply
Chain Management
Methods have been implemented to identify direct cross
replacements for current “Leaded” components
to “Lead-Free”, RoHS compliant packages.
To ensure that lead free components are utilized where
required, specific part numbering systems and Inventory
Control procedures have been implemented to ensure that
lead free parts are uniquely used for products required
to comply with the RoHS directives.
Process
Controls
TeligentEMS, LLC has utilized test modules that include
RoHS compliant PCBs and components for verification
of processes. RoHS compliant solders and pastes were
selected and oven profiles and wave solder processes
were developed. Testing has been completed to validate
these processes and to verify compliance with existing
IPC-A-610 acceptance standards.
Engineering
